Aloha Connection: Global Edition

By The Aloha Team

A sky filled with stars over the Lanakila castle.

Executive Director Vanessa Riegler received the wonderful email below from a camp family last month and they kindly permitted us to share it! The Adler family will be at Ohana Family Camp for their 11th visit this summer, following the first session of the residential camps. Daughter Zoe is heading to Aloha after four years at Hive and son AJ is returning to Lanakila for his third summer.

Hello from Cape Town, South Africa! Beth Ann, Zoe, AJ, and I journeyed down here to the southern tip of Africa yesterday from Brussels, and you won’t believe what happened when we arrived. The driver who picked us up from the airport turned out to be a former Lanakila counselor! Unreal. His name is Tiaan, and he mentioned as we were walking to the van that he had spent some time in Vermont.

“What were you doing in Vermont?” I asked.

“I was working at a summer camp,” Tiaan said.

“Really?  My kids go to a summer camp in Vermont,” I said.

“Which one?”

“It’s this amazing place run by the Aloha Foundation.”

Tiaan stopped in his tracks and stared at us wide-eyed.

“NO WAY!?!”

Well, you can see where this was going. Tiaan and AJ talked all things Viking for the next few minutes. Tiaan was a counselor at Lanakila for three summers in the early 2000s. After being worried initially that his English was not up to the challenge, he said Lanakila ended up being one of the best experiences of his life.

Attached are some photos of the gang with Tiaan. It was a great way to start our trip, which, as you can imagine, had been an odyssey before we even left the house. Because of Omicron, we weren’t sure we would be able to travel until literally the day before departure. But here we are!

Happy holidays!
