Gretchen, Aloha Hive’s talented program director, speaks of a moment that all parents face: seeing her child take a risk. For some, a worst nightmare—singing on stage in front of a crowd of people.
Sometimes we have parents who work at camp, and we are lucky that Gretchen is one of them. And when she talks about that moment of cringe—as she literally “feels” for her daughter on stage—we are reminded about how inadequate the parenting relationship can be to the task of raising an entire child. Without other people to nurture our children’s sense of self-exploration through risk taking, our own limits become theirs.
