The Leader You Want to Be

Interpersonal & Technical Skills  |  Teamwork  |  Self-Reflection

The Aloha Foundation seeks to provide young people with enriching leadership opportunities that prepare them to contribute to the world around them with even greater success. In a safe, supportive, and diverse community, our young leaders acquire both technical and interpersonal skills and are guided by experienced counselors and mentors who are grounded in our educational values. All of our programs encourage this age group to engage with passion, harness creativity, refine teamwork, and nurture self-reflection, thereby delivering transformational experiences and helping each person to be their best self.

Our new mixed-gender Youth Leadership Program (YLP) is open to all youth in grades 9 through 11. The program dates are June 23 – July 18 with a tuition of $6,100.

In 2021, the YLP will be comprised of several components. These include:

TEAMBUILDING & LEADERSHIP TRAINING: This group of young men and women will continue to hone the leadership skills that they have been developing both inside and outside of camp. Our fantastic staff will facilitate this journey through challenges, group projects, discussion and deliberation, and activities. They will work together to create and sustain a tight-knit community where each individual is recognized and provided with opportunities to learn, grow, and lead. By the end of the session, the group will have grown incredibly close from taking this journey together – and will also have learned a lot.

ECO-BUILDING PROJECT: Alongside counselors and skilled professional contractors, the group will spend the better part of a week learning about sustainable, eco-friendly building practices, through the actual planning, building, and finishing of an on-campus structure. Participants will learn many hard skills of building and construction and will experience the satisfaction of taking the project from absolute start to finish in one short week.

WILDERNESS TRIP: The group will take a 6-day trip into some of the most beautiful backcountry areas in New England. Though the trip will be led by our most experienced tripping staff, the group as a whole will be responsible for much of the planning, itinerary, and logistics. Leadership tasks will vary by the day, and all participants will find ways to contribute and to challenge themselves in new ways.

And finally… CAMP! Despite the busy schedule listed above, there will still be time for the old camp favorites: archery, swimming, sports, arts, canoeing, quiet times, boisterous times, talent shows, campfires, and new traditions we’ll create together. While the YLP will be a different summer for participants, it will also be recognizable to anyone who has loved our other programs.

A word about our counselors…The YLP will be staffed by experienced Aloha and Lanakila counselors who are well-known and loved by the participants. The YLP will possess the low staff-to-camper ratios, level of care and attention, and fun as these other long-standing programs. For some of the programming (such as the eco-build), we will add content specialists on staff, in addition to the core staff members.
